Wermacht in the Assault

Tanks and AFVs are the teeth of the assault, closely supported by infantry in carriers, artillery and airstrikes.

Light elements reconnoitre and heavy armed tanks destroy enemy at a distance as they are revealed.

Light vehicles and infantry can be screened behind a rank of heavy tanks as the advance progresses over open ground.

Assault guns and infantry are used to take strongpoints encountered.

The assault seeks to breakthrough the enemy line and then create 'kessel's which are then destroyed .

Infantry assaults are accompanied by airstrikes often in greater strength than any artillery support. Infantry units also have integral close-support guns to help with direct support.

Artillery

Artilery is used selectively to eliminate known enemy positions and ease the passage for attacking troops and to block enemy reinforcements entering the assaulted zone. It is also used to break up enemy attacks when called for in front of defences or by hitting enemy forming-up areas.

Rocket artillery is used to suppress larger areas - replacing costly guns - and to create blocking barrages hindering enemy advances.

Aerial observation is used as much as possible and dive-bombers are utilised to achieve the effect of artillery in many circumstances.

Bombardements are short, precise and intense. Occasionally single batteries are delegated for support of flank guards but generally battalions are used as whole units.
